What are your feelings about plagiarism?
When quoting text or anything for that matter, is it ok to use the words of authors indiscriminately without paying tribute to them with a reference

My personal opinion is that it is pretty pointless, who the !@$#@ cares about reading references if it spoils the flow of the point you are trying to make.
I got nailed quite a bit for plagiarism this past year when handing in assignments and try not to knowingly do it, I usually would use something like as Rod Randall said, good fences make good neighbours in a book about the telecosm.
I get that writers wanna be acknowledged, but are they so vain that if someone uses a sentence from a book they are ready slap you with a subpoena.
I conversation are we to say as per specific author check reference below while talking to somebody?
The argument now goes if the specific person is no longer among the breathing, would they care if you use their literature without referencing? The other end argues that we always reference the Nabi (PBUH) and his followers when quoting the Quran or hadith and they are no longer among the living.
I am just ranting here because I got hit over the knuckles because of plagiarism, I still don't see the harm in it.

ah the uneasy relationship between the freedom to exchange information and the argument for the integrity of theorists and their theories. Or something like that. It isnt really about a writer's ego but ensuring that ideas are credited to the person you are using to support an argument. It is all context dependent. Namely that in academia it is imperative to substantiate your argument, journalism is similar.
However I have a very low opinion on South African higher learning institutions or as I call them, obedience school for two legged dogs. Journalists are just lower than lawyers so you can only imagine.
But on a serious note, I think if you develop an idea or argument it is important, as far as academics are concerned that you be credited and acknowledged unless you yourself can show evidence of how your substantiate your argument and how you have come to that conclusion.
Hope that makes sense.
Working with intellectual property all the time. I am of the opinion that as long as you don't credit as your own, you don't have to mention who it is by.
But if it's for work or education purposes, then yes, references are extremely important. As the institutions make the broad assumption that the work is all yours unless otherwise stated.
To keep all grumps satisfied, just reference it! Save yourself a spot of bother.
Thank you for you comments, I agree, when used for argumentative and to substantiate claims, referencing should be used, however when someone posts a notice on FB using a quote from a book, Quran, or Hadith, don't blast the person for not acknowledging the writer, somebody just thought the quote was beautiful without the intention to gain something from it. But I do agree that it is needed to assist you when debating or making claims.
